Michael accidentally meets the much older Hanna. She helps him when he is sick outside her house. He wants for their Help and thank slips so in a relationship with the 36-year-old. He is fascinated by her, because Hanna attracts him.
But one day they just disappeared and Michael do not know why.
Only years later he meets her again - in court. He is a law student, she is a defendant in the process of post-war period. It will, with other guards, the deaths of many people on the conscience, in which he has let the Jews burnt in a church.
Torn Michael tries to uncover the secrets of Hanna to come.

Before I began to read, I've adjusted to a difficult and lofty, complicated writing style - and was surprised. Schlink's style is short and to the point, liquid and can be read easily. There were certainly a few scenes that were described somewhat more complex, and posed simple and complex questions. But all in all, the novel was read.
is told from Michael's point of view. In between, he explains how he sees things now, so when he is older and tells the story, or why it has taken this or that decision. He makes the actions happen revue and analyzed his actions partly explains why something might be gone but then Sun
With him you can feel the fascination with the much older woman and is largely trapped in its history.
detail will not tell what I think is very good. Were it otherwise, would the book, I think, do a demolition. That's just the passages from Michael's life are told. Of everything one can, after all, do not remember yourself. The brevity makes it so authentic and yet you find yourself well in Michael's (and Hannah), a life story.

Short: An interesting story about a difficult relationship, illiteracy and war!
